CMS-Internet Based PECOS
Provider Enrollment
Chain and Ownership System

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has established an Internet-based Medicare provider/supplier enrollment process, known as Internet-based Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS).

PECOS supports the Medicare provider and supplier enrollment process by capturing provider/supplier information from the CMS-855 family of forms. The system manages, tracks, and validates enrollment data collected in both paper form and electronically via the Internet.

This new Medicare enrollment process will allow physicians and non-physician practitioners (except suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS)) the option of enrolling, making a change in their Medicare enrollment information, or tracking the status of their Medicare enrollment applications throughout the enrollment process.

Internet-based PECOS for physicians and non-physician practitioners is now available to all States.  In addition, CMS will make Internet-based PECOS available next year to all providers and suppliers (except DMEPOS suppliers).
